Diploma Module 1 - Add-ons

This chapter includes miscellaneous add-ons to other chapters.

Stitch resist gulls (Chapter 6 - Colouring of Materials)

The outline of gulls drawn on an old linen sheet was

  • overstitched on the gull on the left
  • gathered on the two gulls to the right.

This was dyed with procion dyes (10 tsp of made-up dye, 100ml soda solution, 100ml salt solution and 250ml water - all made up as per chapter 6) and left for 7 hours.  Both back and front are shown as I prefer the marks made on the back as the overstitching gave more interesting marks.  You also might be able to see I put a hole in the fabric as my gathers were extremely tight and very difficult to remove...but it was an old sheet!

Stitch Samples

Development of Image 283 twined wing with shadows

Image 286 - HDR enhanced image using HDR Max App on smartphone.

Image 287 - HDR enhanced photo inkjet printed onto Luradur.  (This has yet to be developed.)

Image 288 - HDR inkjet image coated with acrylic wax and stitched using couching and needleweaving.

Stitch Sample

The sample shown in Images 289/90 is on paraffin-waxed calico.  The gulls were scratched into the wax and then the piece was inked with Quink Ink and wiped so that all that remained was the ink in the recesses of the wax (rather like etching).  The stitching is in fine cotton covered wire and linen to give an impression of birds in flight...(not sure about this).
